S. Glenn Baker, MA

S. Glenn Baker

Glenn graduated with a B.S. in psychology and a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Iowa in May of 2013, and began working in the AADM lab with Dr. Laura Scherer the following fall. Glenn’s primary research interests lie in judgment and decision debiasing and metacognition. People are often aware of potential unwanted influences on their judgments from everyday life, for example, influences of emotions, political beliefs, and race. When people suspect that their judgments are biased, under what circumstances are they successful at avoiding that bias? And to what extent are people aware when they have or have not made a biased judgment, after the fact? Glenn’s research has found that a surprisingly large proportion of people believe that it is acceptable for their judgments to be influenced by apparently irrelevant information. Glenn is also passionate about teaching, research methods, and history of empirical psychology. His favorite part of the day is getting to work with students and helping them achieve their academic goals.

Niraj Patel, MA

Niraj Patel

Niraj graduated with a B.S. in psychology and biology from The Ohio State University in 2013, and joined the AADM lab with Dr. Laura Scherer in fall of 2014. Niraj is broadly interested in helping people make better decisions, especially better medical decisions. He became interested in this when he started to notice that people’s lifestyle preferences often impact their medical decisions and can sometimes lead to suboptimal outcomes. For example, Niraj is interested in what causes parents to reject vaccines for their children. Furthermore, some people prefer to seek medical care for minor issues (such as colds) versus others who only seek medical care when an issue has become serious (such as when it has become hard to walk). Niraj would like to understand what leads to this individual difference in propensity to seek medical care.
